Prison officers charged for ganja trafficking

TWO serving members of the Guyana Prison Service were on Wednesday remanded to prison by Acting Chief Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus for trafficking almost 500 grams of cannabis.

Cleveland Cross, 22 of Graham Street, Plaisance and Abdool Farook, 24 of #11 Village, Corentyne, Berbice were jointly charged with having 434 grams of cannabis in their possession for the purpose of trafficking on May 27 at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown.
Both men denied the charge.

Farook’s attorney, Moti Singh told the court that no drugs were found on his client but on the other prison officers in the vehicle.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield stated that on the day in question, Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels, acting on information received, contacted the police. The officers then proceeded to Avenue of the Republic and contacted Cross and Farook.
A search was conducted on Cross and the drugs were found in a haversack he had in his possession. When questioned by the police, Cross told ranks that Farook gave him the drugs to keep.

Prosecutor Mansfield told the court that both defendant gave caution statements admitting to their involvement in the drug trafficking charge.
Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus remanded the duo to prison until June 8.
