HISTORY was created on Sunday at the village of Pakuri, formerly St Cuthbert’s Mission on the Linden/Soesdyke Highway, when Beverley Clenkian was elected the Toshao.
Clenkian, the first female to be elected to head the popular village, gained 122 votes and she was followed by Neil Henry (108) and Laurena Shuman (90).
The primary school teacher replaces the village’s popular former leader Lenox Shuman, who did not seek re-election. Elections at Indigenous communities are ongoing this month. Each village will be voting to elect leaders between May 15 and June 15.
