CONSTRUCTION of the Indian Immigration Monument located at Palmyra, Corentyne, East Berbice, is expected to be completed in the “shortest time possible”.
This follows an inspection of the site by a ministerial team and representatives from the High Commission of India in Guyana.

Minister of State Joseph Harmon, who made the announcement at a post-Cabinet press conference Friday, said it was agreed at Cabinet that work should recommence immediately.

A cooperation agreement was signed between the Governments of Guyana and India for reconstruction of the historic monument.

The design of the monument, which collapsed in April 2017 while under construction, was inherited by the coalition government from the former PPP administration.
Minister Trotman during the site visit last Sunday, said the mistake was to assume that the design inherited from the former PPP administration would have worked.
Government is hopeful that construction will be concluded before an official visit by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the latter part of the year.

The high-level team comprised Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. George Norton; Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman and Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, along with three officials from the Indian High Commission.
