THE resuscitation of a sea sluice at Bush Lot Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB) at a cost of $15M, is on schedule.
This sluice will add to the capacity of the drainage infrastructure in WCB to discharge floodwaters in vulnerable areas in that part of the coast, a National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) official said.
It is the fourth sea sluice from the colonial era to be resuscitated by the NDIA from last year to date.
Discharge sluices at Nos.28 and #29 Villages and Golden Grove /Lovely Lass Villages in the heart of the flood-prone area known as GLUTT, were completed and commissioned last year.
A third sluice, resuscitated at No.12 village, was not commissioned, but will be operationalised in time for the expected May-June rains.
Bids for the sluice at Bush Lot were requested by the Ministry of Agriculture for the supply, delivery and testing of hand-operated winches.
A reliable source disclosed that labour for the resuscitation of the Bush Lot sea sluice will be carried out by the Mahaica-Mahaicony-Abary/Agriculture Development Authority (MMA/ADA) using local labour with funds provided by the NDIA.
The official disclosed that the two sea sluices recommissioned in WCB last year in addition to the one previously existing at #28 and 29, had performed exceedingly well during the rainy season of November/December 2017.
He added that the introduction of the resuscitated sluice at Bush Lot will reduce the probability of flooding in areas in WCB during the upcoming May/June rainy season and beyond.
