– Essequibo business community urges Exxon

ESSEQUIBO Chamber of Commerce President Deleep Singh is calling on ExxonMobil to assist in the rehabilitation of the Mainstay airstrip to improve air transportation to and from the Essequibo Coast.

Singh made the request to Exxon representatives at an Oil Spill Response Presentation held by Exxon subsidiary Esso Exploration Production Guyana Limited in Region Two on Monday.
During the question segment of the presentation, Singh made the request to the company to assist in making the airstrip operational.
“Exxon has helicopter, as such, if there is an emergency or any other event in Region Two, then you can fly safe and direct within Anna Regina right from the Mainstay airstrip,” he said.

Singh, who spoke on behalf of the business community, said the airstrip has been out of operation for years and it is his desire as chairman of the Essequibo Chamber to see it become operational again.

He said operationalisation of the airstrip will boost tourism and business in Region Two.
Supporting this request was another businessman and rice miller Roopan Ramotar, who said the airstrip will improve commerce in the region.
The request also drew support from Region Two Chairman Devanand Ramdatt.
The airstrip has been out of operation for years, and currently, residents on the Essequibo Coast utilise the airstrip at Hampton Court.
The Mainstay airstrip is a 20-minute drive from the town of Anna Regina.
