THE sun shone brilliantly last Sunday to set the stage for Rising Sun to rise to the occasion and sparkle, as they captured the annual George Alphonso Sr T10 Memorial one-day competition.

The four-team tournament was played at the Charity Community Centre ground in front of a large and vociferous crowd.

The first match saw Pomeroon Oil Mill Challengers prove too strong for Teneze Ferme ‘B’. Winning the toss and batting, Pomeroon Oil Mill Challengers posted 92-4 from their 10 overs with Eric Gomes stroking 32 (2×4, 2×6).

They returned to restrict Teneze Ferme to 63-7 when their overs expired, to win comfortably by 29 runs. In the other encounter, Rising Sun humbled Super Kings by five wickets.

Batting first, after being sent in, Super Kings reached 81-2 mainly due to an unbeaten half-century from Ronald Kanhai (6×4, 2×6).

The Kings then could not prevent the Sun from shining, as they achieved the target reaching 83-5 from 9.2 overs to win by 5 wickets. Captain Sanjeev Ramdeen led with an aggressive 42, laced with three fours and three sixes.

In the final, Pomeroon Oil Mill took first strike. Their top order struggled and it was left to Eric Gomes’ brisk 25 which took his side to 85-7 in their 10 overs.

Sanjeev Ramdeen claimed 3-6 from his 2 overs through his controlled medium pace bowling. In reply, captain Sanjeev Ramdeen capped off a brilliant all-round performance with a match-winning innings of 38 (6×4) to lead his team to 91-4 and win the competition by six wickets.

At the presentation, Mrs Kerenza Fernandes, daughter of the late George Alphonso Sr, presented the prizes. Sanjeev Ramdeen received trophies for claiming the most wickets and scoring the most runs. The winning team then received their trophy and $60 000 while the runners-up collected a trophy and $40 000.
