Fruta Conquerors stop Milerock to move into second spot

DEFENDER Colin Nelson netted twice for Western Tigers in their 2-1 win over New Amsterdam United, to keep the West Ruimveldt-based club unbeaten in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League and move to the top of the 10-team table, when action continued at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground on Friday evening.

Fruta Conquerors also picked up their fifth win of the Elite League on Friday, with a 4-1 whipping of Linden’s Milerock United.

Behind coach Calvin Allen, Western Tigers have imposed themselves as one of the favourites to win the country’s top senior football league title, and so far, they have been living up to expectations.
On Friday, Nelson netted in the third and 32nd minutes to give Western Tigers their fifth win in six outings and to move them to 16 points (five wins, one draw) but just one point above Fruta Conquerors.

The Tucville-based team’s tally of five wins and a draw puts them in second place behind Western Tigers. Against a hapless Milerock United, coach Sampson Gilbert’s team saw goals from Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson (30th), Denis Edwards (42nd), Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams (77th) and Anthony Benfield (80th).

Colric Beckles scored the lone goal for the Linden unit in the 60th minute. Milerock slipped to their fifth defeat of the Elite League, while securing only one win to settle on three points.

Meanwhile, tonight defending champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF) will host sixth-place Buxton United in the night’s second fixture of the double-header at their Camp Ayanganna ground.

From 17:30hrs, fourth-place Victoria Kings will look to secure their fourth win of the Elite League against a stubborn Den Amstel side.
