THE crime prevention programme for the East Coast of Demerara is picking up steam following the donation of several sporting articles by Senior Superintendent Edmond Cooper.

Commander Cooper, in charge of the C-Division recently donated a quantity of balls to the Victoria Youth Club in an attempt to ensure that the youths have an afternoon activity as a deterrent from crime and delinquency.

Cooper told Chronicle Sport, “We (the police) want to let them know crime is not the way, so on the part of the police we try to organise sporting activities and social programmes to have them meaningfully engaged.”

He continued, “We stayed with Victoria Youth Club where we donated several footballs to them. We plan to do the same distribution to the other villages on the East Coast.”
He noted that the initiative will be spread to several other venues along the corridor.

Over the years, the Guyana Police Force has been using sport as an avenue to address crime and delinquency in several communities across the country.

Cricket and football matches as well as community outreach programmes are also methods through which the GPF hopes to foster developmental ties between citizens and the Force.
