IN celebration of Phagwah, the Festival of Colours, the Indian Commemoration Trust on Sunday hosted an evening of Indian culture at the Indian Monument Gardens.
Unlike the Trust’s previous Holi celebrations, which were marked by the playing of Phagwah, this year the committee sought to showcase local talent, particularly that of the younger folk.
Secretary of the Trust, Nadira Naraine, told the Guyana Chronicle that due to the number of events hosted on the actual day of Phagwah, it was decided that this year a mela would be held after the holiday to give patrons something fresh to enjoy.

“This year we decided to do something different and it’s really good,” she said.
The mela began at 16:00hrs and patrons were treated to Indian cultural items from local singers, dancers and chowtal groups.
The treasurer of the Trust Radhika Sankar said the promotion of youth and their talent is the way forward for Guyana.
“That’s what we’re gearing the use of the gardens for in the future — promoting the talent of youth in music, dance, drama or anything,” she said.
The Trust is also preparing for the 180th anniversary of Indian Arrival in Guyana, which will be observed on May 5.
