TALENTED batsman Chandrapaul Hemraj is 11 Guyanese who will be a part of the biggest party in sport, the Hero Caribbean Premier League for the sixth edition, which bowls off on August 8.
The 24-year-old joined Steven Jacobs and Ronsford Beaton, as the Guyanese, who will ply their trade outside of the Warriors’ camp.
The left-hander from Strathavon, Cane Grove, was snapped up by the St. Lucia Stars for US$ 5,000, when the players’ draft was held on Thursday in London.
“I knew I would get pick[ed]…I’m really excited to join the St. Lucia Stars for this year CPL,” the former West Indies Under-19 player said yesterday.
Hemraj, who had taken a self-imposed exile from the game after the 2014-15 first-class season, returned with a bang.
After finishing as the fourth highest run-scorer (566 runs) in the last Jaguars Franchise League, a three-day competition that replaced the tradition Inter-county tournament, Hemraj was awarded a recall to the national setup and he grabbed the opportunity with both hands.
Hemraj piled up 623 runs from 10 first-class games. He made five fifties with a highest of 90, while his tally of runs was the most by a Guyanese and the fifth highest in the competition.
But, it was his consistency in the just-concluded Super50, where he chalked up 227 runs that earned him a West Indies ‘A’ team selection.
However, while his focus is on the three-match, one-day series against the England Lions, Hemraj is eagerly looking forward to the CPL as well.
He would rub shoulders with the likes of global T20 stars Kieron Pollard, Lendl Simmons, Darren Sammy and Mitch McCleneghan in the St. Lucia Stars line-up, an opportunity he hopes to learn as much as possible.
“We have some guys there with a whole lot of experience and I will try to learn as much as I can from them, whenever I get the opportunity I will try to make an impact,” he said.
