… sentenced to 54 months in jail; fined $7.1M

A 40-year-old mother of four was on Thursday sentenced to 54 months in jail and fined $7.1M after taking the wrap for her 19-year-old daughter in relation to trafficking almost six pounds of cocaine through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on Valentine’s Day.

Kavita Persaud and her 19-year-old daughter, Rachael Narine appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan last week and pleaded not guilty to trafficking 2.660 kilogrammes of cocaine through the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on February 14, 2018.

However, when the matter was recalled on Friday, Persaud pleaded guilty to the charge on the ground that the matter be dismissed against her daughter.
Prosecutor of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), Konyo Sandiford told the court that the teenager was an outgoing passenger destined to travel to the USA when she was searched and the illicit substance discovered in her handbag.

She said the young lady and her mother, who had accompanied her to the airport, were taken into police custody where the mother subsequently confessed to the crime.
Sandiford further explained that the mother told CANU officers of other persons involved and how much her daughter was paid to traffic the drugs.

Persaud broke down in tears as she explained that she is a single parent and is the mother of four-three boys and a girl.

“I was desperate and I was in need of a shelter for my kids them… I don’t know what I was thinking, I was just desperate,” the woman told the court.

The Chief Magistrate after considering Persaud’s early guilty plea and the position of trust she was in, sentenced her to 54 months in jail along with a fine of $7.1M.
