‘Broadsided’ sister with cutlass – six months

A WEST Ruimveldt man was on Friday brought before the court on a charge of assault causing bodily harm.

It was alleged that 21-year-old Leroy Roberts assaulted his sister Roxanne Thompson causing her bodily harm.
Roberts pleaded guilty to the charge when he was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court.

According to the facts provided by prosecutor Sanj Singh, the victim complained to her mother about the dogs barking. Upon hearing that, the defendant locked up the animals and a heated argument ensued. The defendant went into his house and armed himself with a knife, cutlass and a piece of wood, he chopped Thompson on her left hand and also broadsided her on her body with the cutlass, causing her to receive injuries.
The defendant told the court that Thompson came up to him, pointed her finger in his face and pelted him with a piece of wood. This drove him to anger and caused him to commit the unlawful act.
Roberts was sentenced by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly to six months in prison.
