…remembered as loving, compassionate and disciplined

LITERALLY hundreds yesterday turned out at the Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, David Street, Kitty, to a Thanksgiving Service to celebrate the life of the late Maj. (Ret’d) Michalene Maria Wilson, formerly of the Guyana Defence Force and to pay their last respects to the fallen military icon.

The flag-draped casket bearing the mortal remains of Mjr. (Rrt’d) Michalene Wilson stands before the bereaved congregation.

Major Wilson died on February 4, after a brief period of illness. She was 64.
Among the distinguished gathering joining the husband of the deceased, Lt. Colonel Ret’d, Victor Wilson and other sorrowing family members in bidding an emotional farewell to the former champion army rank were: President David Granger, Head of the Disciplined Services; First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger; Minister of State, Hon. Joseph Harmon; and other Ministers of Government; Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier Patrick West and other senior members of the Guyana Defence Force, (Past and Serving) and a wide cross section of other ranks of the army, including the Veterans of the Women’s Army (WAC) who turned out in their numbers.

There was also full representation of priests from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Georgetown as well as members drawn from the Holy Rosary Congregation of which Major Wilson was a faithful and dedicated member.
Officiating Priest was Father John Persaud who did the Homily as well as the Final Commendation. Meanwhile, there were several glowing tributes during which the late Major was remembered as a selfless, loving and compassionate individual; disciplined and a stickler for excellence, yet well liked by all.
