ALL staff members have been accounted for following a major fire that ripped through the three-storey Regent Household Electronics building on Regent Street, Georgetown, on Wednesday afternoon.
Owner of the business, Shaheed Hamid, told reporters that all employees were safe as firefighters battled for hours to contain the blaze, which sent thick plumes of smoke over sections of central Georgetown.
Meanwhile a section of the building had collapsed as firefighters battled the major blaze that started shortly after 13:03pm.
Deputy Fire Chief Wayne Scotland speaking briefly to the media at the scene, confirmed that the western side of the structure had given way under the intensity of the fire.
He noted that firefighters were engaged in continuous firefighting operations from the time of the initial blaze in the afternoon.

Firefighters were attacking the blaze from multiple angles in an effort to prevent it from spreading to neighbouring buildings.
The intensity of the blaze prompted persons in nearby buildings to evacuate their premises as smoke engulfed the surrounding area.
Despite the partial collapse, Scotland said the blaze had been contained to a single building, after crews focused their efforts on fully extinguishing the fire and preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.
A section of Regent Street was temporarily closed to east-bound and west-bound traffic between Light and Albert streets as emergency and fire-fighting operations continued well into the evening.
Motorists travelling east along Regent Street were being diverted south onto Light Street, while westbound traffic is being diverted north or south onto Albert Street.

Traffic ranks were on the ground managing the diversions and worked to maintain the flow of traffic in surrounding areas.
Hamid told the media that Wednesday’s fire is the second major blaze he has experienced at the location.
The previous fire had occurred in 2009, when the Grand Coastal Guest House, which once operated at the property, was destroyed by fire.
Regent Household Electronics has operated as a retailer of household appliances and electronics in the busy Regent Street commercial district.
The cause of Wednesday’s fire has not yet been determined, while the extent of the damage is still being assessed.
