Cabinet approves new Argentine ambassador

HIS Excellency Dr. Felipe Alejandro Gardella is Argentina’s new Ambassador to Guyana, Minister of State Joseph Harmon said.

He said Cabinet approved Dr. Gardella’s appointment to serve as a Resident Ambassador to Guyana when it met last Tuesday. Guyana and Argentina established diplomatic relations in October, 1972 and have since enjoyed cordial relations. “Our two countries have engaged at the bilateral level in areas of trade, economic, technical and scientific cooperation, as well as at the multilateral level in such fora as the United Nations and MERCOSUR,” Minister Harmon said while addressing media operatives at the Ministry of the Presidency on Friday.

He said with the appointment of Ambassador Gardella, it is expected that the two countries will have greater cooperation and enhanced relations. He replaces His Excellency Luis Martino.
Through the South/South Cooperation, Argentina has been fostering regional integration through art and culture. Last September, the Ministry of Social Cohesion and the Embassy of Argentina hosted a reception at the Theatre Guild in honour of art restoration and preservation experts, Mr. Néstor Barrio, Dean of the Research Institute on the Cultural Patrimony; and Damasia Gallegos, Director of the “Taller Tarea,” who were visiting at the time. The team was in Guyana to give much-needed support to the restoration of the pieces of art in the National Collection housed at the National Gallery of Art.

It was explained that the visit was as a result of collaborative effort between the Government of Guyana and the Government of Argentina, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, involving the restoration and conservation, over a period of time, of a number of works of art belonging to the National Collection of Art housed at the National Gallery of Art, CASTELLANI HOUSE. The project is being implemented by the “TALLER TAREA” of the Cultural Heritage Research Institute (TAREA-IIPC) at the National University of San Martín (UNSAM) located in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
