THE finalists for the GT Beer/BFA/Candy Boss Berbice eight-a-side football tournament were determined after the completion of semi-final action which kicked off on New Year’s Day and Wednesday respectively.
Georgetown Police Football Club will do battle with Beacons Football Club today in the final that offers an attractive winning stake of $500 000.
In the second semi-final which was played on Wednesday at the All Saints ground, New Amsterdam. Edinburgh Gunners FC came up against Beacons FC. Beacons exploded at the opportune point in the tournament to sink a hapless Edinburgh Gunners FC 7-2.
For the Beacons FC, Travis Lyken and Deon Alfred were in red-hot form as they both nailed a hat-trick of goals.
The Gunners opened the scoring with a 5th minute Joseph Giddings goal early in the encounter. Nevertheless, Beacons then opened their account with an on-target shot from Lyken in the 14th minute,
Alfred found his range in the 22nd minute, as Beacons started to dominate with their tactics. Lyken netted a brace in the closing stages of the first half that saw the score line 3-1 at halftime.
At the recommencement of the second half, Gunners’ Sherlock Phillips gave his team their second goal in the 35th minute. This brought extra life into Beacons as they dominated proceedings from that point.
They blasted four additional goals compliment of Alfred’s brace in the 42nd, Lyken’s third goal in the 54th minute, and Alfred responded with his third in the 60th minute.
The game was far gone for the Gunners at this juncture, 6-2.
Kimba Braithwaite placed his name on the score line with a 63th minute goal to pull his team to a thumping victory as the final whistle sounded to leave the score 7-2.
The total prize package in cash and trophies is $1M. While the winners are set to pocket $500 000, $300 000 and $100 000 will go to the runners-up and third-place clubs respectively. $50 000 each will be at stake for the best goalkeeper and the highest goalscorer – all under the sponsorship of the GT Beer Brand.
The third-place playoff will feature Monedderlust FC against Edinburgh Gunners while in the final the lawmen Georgetown Police FC will do battle with Beacons at the All Saints ground, New Amsterdam.
