POLICE in Berbice have arrested a man in connection with the murder of a fisherman Sahadeo Sankar called “Goja”40 whose body was discovered at around 06:30hrs Wednesday in front of Annirude Grocery Shop, Grant 1802 Public Road, Crabwood Creek, East Berbice Corentyne.
Sankar who has no fixed place of abode has been living in a car at Burn Sawmill Dam for several months. A police release confirmed the suspect has since confessed to the murder. The suspect a 32-year-old of Crabwood Creek was seen on a Close Circuit Television (CCTV) beating and kicking the victim. The surveillance footage also captured the suspect in pursuit of the victim on the roadway beating him about his body.
According to reports the incident occurred at around 03:00hrs. Reports indicate that Sankar and the suspect were seen imbibing as customary with the duo; during the drinking session an argument ensued, which subsequently led to an altercation. It is alleged that the suspect then whipped out a knife and injured the thirty two-year-old man, who in retaliation began hitting Sankar about the body until he collapsed.
Meanwhile, a relative of Sankar told the Guyana Chronicle that she last saw him on New Year’s Day when he visited and spent the night. “He don’t really have a place to stay so he does deh all over ah drink and sleep… .” The relative explained that due to his constant drinking habits people would usually take advantage of him and beat him up.
