THE police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 40-year-old man whose partly decomposed body was discovered at a house in Number 58 Village, East Berbice.
According to the police, Jameer Ibrahim, called “Wing”, was last seen drinking on Monday at a friend’s house.
He was reportedly discovered by the said friend on Thursday morning, after alerting persons in the neighbourhood that the body was smelling and taken over by maggots.
Reports are that Ibrahim and the friend are alcoholics, and would drink for days on end.
A relative of his said Ibrahim is an epilectic and may have had an episode after his drinking spree and collapsed and died without his friend being any the wiser.
According to a source, his drinking buddy told the police that he thought Ibrahim was asleep, and that it was only after he began getting this funny smell that he went closer and saw his face covered in maggots.
The police have since arrested two persons, including the said drinking buddy, as their investigations continue.
A post-mortem is expected to be done on Tuesday, since funeral parlours in the Berbice district have refused the body due to the advanced stage of decomposition.
