TWENTY-year-old Damion Walcott, called “Sky Cow,” on Thursday appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, charged for causing the death of a 38-year-old pedestrian on the Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara Public Road on Christmas Eve.
Walcott, of Tuschen New Scheme, East Bank Essequibo, was charged with driving minibus BLL 3240 on December 24 at Bagotstown in a dangerous manner, which resulted in the death of Shahab Scipio.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on $500,000 bail. The matter has been adjourned until January 15.
Walcott also appeared before City Magistrate Dylon Bess, charged for driving without a licence; failing to report the accident; failing to render assistance to Scipio; and driving an uninsured motor vehicle.
He pleaded not guilty to all of the charges, and was released on total bail of $80,000. The matters were adjourned until January 11.
According to reports, on the day in question at around 00:10hrs, the minibus which was being driven by Walcott was proceeding south along the western side of the eastern carriageway, reportedly at a fast rate of speed when the pedestrian allegedly crossed the road from west to east and collided with the vehicle.
Scipio, after the impact, fell onto the roadway and was reportedly dragged some distance by the vehicle before it came to a halt.
The victim was taken in an unconscious state to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
