EIGHT teams from West Demerara Football Association will be in action tomorrow, as the Den Amstel Football Club hosts the GT Beer knockout football tournament.
The club joined forces with Banks DIH to host the straight knockout tournament which was launched yesterday at Thirst Park.
The tournament should conclude on January 7 and will be graced by teams such as Young Achievers, Eagles United, Golden Warriors, Stewartville, Pouderoyen, Uitvlugt and Wales United.
Coach of the host club, O’Neal Yearwood, was elated that the company is on board for the tournament, saying that it will give teams in the association who are not a part of the ongoing national tournament a chance to showcase their skills.
More so, Yearwood felt his side stand a significant chance to walk away with championship honours despite their Elite League players not being able to play.
According to the coach, his confidence stems from his unit having a wide cross-section of players who can mount a stern challenge.
Additionally, Communications Manager of Banks DIH Limited, Troy Peters, stated that the entity is extremely pleased to support the venture under its GT Beer brand, which he termed the “beer of the season”.
Peters said the tournament adds to the entity’s support of year-end activities and development of football with tournaments in full swing in Berbice and Linden.
“We will continue to support football despite the negatives that we see happening around football at this time. As a good corporate citizen we are here to support community initiatives and this is one for the people of Den Amstel,” Peters expressed.
Tomorrow’s fixture pits Achievers against Eagles from 18:30hrs followed by the hosts battling Warriors from 21:00hrs.
Action will resume on December 26 with Pouderoyen facing Stewartville from 18:00hrs after which Uitvlugt will engage Wales from 20:30hrs.
Apart from the $400 000 first place prize, $200 000 will be awarded to the second-place team while $100 000 and $50 000 will be given to third- and fourth-placers respectively.
