LiINDEN sides Winners Connection and Milerock FC became the first sides to advance to the quarter-finals of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Corona Beer ‘Super 16’ Knockout Championship, which kicked off at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground on Friday.

Winners Connection earned a 3 – 2 penalty win over Camptown FC after an exciting 2 – 2 regulation and extra time score, while Milerock ‘caged’ Cougars 3 – 0 to give the home sides a perfect start in the inaugural tournament.

In the opening game, the penalty shootout came as a surprise after Camptown got off to a brilliant start when, from a corner, Ozel Small flew high to rocket home a head shot past the Winners Connection goalkeeper; making it a 1-0 advantage which they maintained up to half time.

Small made it 2-0 for the City side in the 64th minute and it seemed that it was over bar the shouting. But late goals from Adrian Aaron in the 85th minute and another, one minute from regulation (89th minute) play by Joel Jemmot knot things up, forcing extra time.

However, this failed to bring about a winner as no goals were scored and penalty shootout was ordered.
Camptown scored their first try but inexplicably missed their next four and, while Winners missed their first two, they made their third and again missed the two more with both teams 1-1 after the mandatory five kicks.’

In sudden-death play, both sides failed to score their first try, but scored in their second and the scores were 1-0, but Camptown could not score on their next attempt and Shaquille Frank closed out their opponents with his penalty, which sent the team and supporters into a frenzied celebration.

Milerock started positively as they were able to put the pressure on the Berbice side early from a 2nd minute goal from Oswald Benjamin and in the 16th minute, Denzil Fordyce showed his game continues to improve with goal number two for the Linden side in the 16th minute and soon after it was 3 – 0 when Joel McKinnon converted from the penalty shot after a ‘handle ball’ was penalised with the penalty in the 20th minute.

This early offensive jump on the Cougars saw them being unable to mount a real threat to the Milerock side and when the final whistle came it was Milerock moving through this first run by a 3-0 score.
