PRESIDENT David Granger will journey to Nairobi, Kenya within days to attend the United Nations’ third Environment Assembly (UNEA-3) set for December 4-6, State Minister Joseph Harmon announced on Thursday.

The Assembly is the highest decision-making body on the environment.
During the high-level forum, President Granger will deliver the feature address. He will also deliver the keynote address at a high-level side event on reducing pollution in the extractive sector.

Minister Harmon said that Cabinet on Tuesday took note of Guyana’s growing recognition on the international stage.
“(It) reflects Guyana’s growing international profile as a leading advocate for the protection of the environment and the recognition which is being accorded to its green trajectory of development,” Minister Harmon noted.

He said the Assembly offers Guyana the opportunity to showcase its green development agenda and to press for further international action to arrest global pollution.
This UNEA-3 side event on Forests and Life on Land creates an opportunity to highlight the importance of forests, from their contributions to economies and industry to diversity and energy.

It is expected that global leaders will discuss the importance of forests in fulfilling the 2030 Agenda, and recent policy developments, including the landmark adoption of the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2030 by the UN General Assembly.
