Sixty-four students were on Saturday honoured at BOSAI’s 11th Annual Bursary Awards at the Lichas Hall in the mining town of Linden.

Those awarded were the top performers at the National Grade Six Assessment and Caribbean Secondary Examination Council. The category under which they were awarded include: employees’ children top 10, Linden’s top 10 and National top 10. Renis Morian, Regional Chairman Region 10, encouraged the awardees to continue striving for excellence and to “let the sky be the limit.”

He also challenged the students to “guard against the negativity,” and to stay focused. Bosai General Manager, Eric Yu in who is very passionate about supporting education said his company currently has 600 Lindeners employed and hopes that someday he would be able to employ some of the recipients to Bosai Minerals Guyana Inc. or at Guyana Manganese Inc.

Assistant Chief Education Officer Second, June-Ann Gonsalves in her remarks stated that the educational landscape has been changing over the past years. “These changes are aimed at providing greater opportunities for all of our students to maximize their potential. We want to offer greater diversity and flexibility in our educational system.”
“I want to encourage parents, continue to support the recipients today, let them go as far as they want to go and as far as they can” implored District Education Officer Sub-Region 2, Kean Adams.

According to Senior Personnel Officer, Truedel Marks, the programme has awarded over 500 students over the past years. She also pointed out that it is the largest company-sponsored bursary in the whole of Guyana where over $1.5 million in cash and prizes are awarded yearly. The awards ceremony started in 2006 when only the employees’ children were recognized. However, in 2007 the top achievers of Region 10 were drafted into the programme and in 2012 the nation’s best was added to the platform.
