Mainstay, Mashabo among winners of National Village Day of Sports in Region 2

DESPITE the inclement weather, over one hundred participants from various Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDC) and Amerindian villages participated in the first-ever Regional Village Day, held at the Queenstown Community Centre ground last Tuesday.
The range of events included cricket, football and dominoes competitions as well as cultural presentations including folksongs, dances and poetry. The colourful display and well-coordinated events got on the way with the cricket competition.

Mashabo Village males got the better of Akawini Village males in the 6-overs affair. Batting first, Akawini Village posted a challenging 71-6 in their 6 overs.
In reply, Mashabo Village comfortably won the match, reaching 72 without loss in the final over to achieve victory by 10 wickets. Meanwhile Mashabo Village were again in winners’ row, this time with the females overpowering Capoey Village females. In the 4-overs encounter, Capoey Village females could muster only 27-5 in their 4 overs.
However, it proved insufficient as Mashabo Village females raced to 29-4 in the third over to win by 6 wickets.

The attention was then turned to football as Mainstay Village males’ outplayed Aberdeen/Zorg-en-Vlygh in the 5-a-side match.
During the 20 minutes run, Mainstay Village males were able to hold on to a slim lead throughout and eventually won by a 2-1 margin.
The day of varied activities also saw the hosting of a King Dominoes competition which was won by Derrick Garraway of Evergreen/Paradise NDC with 18 games after the completion of his allotted sittings.

During the official ceremony, presentations were made by Deputy Regional Executive Officer (DREO) Roop Kumar and Administrator Morris Walcott. Also in attendance was Assistant Regional Executive Officer (AREO) Yvette Hastings-Tafares as well as several Toshoas of the various Amerindian villages.

The Day of Sports and cultural presentations were sponsored by the Regional Administration, Region 2 in collaboration with the Ministry of Communities and was in recognition of National Village Day under the theme ‘Coming together for Strength, Growth and Development.
Trophies were presented to all the participating teams. (Elroy Stephney)
