A 30-YEAR-OLD gold miner was on Monday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for trafficking cannabis.
Christopher Marks of Chester Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB), denied that on October 21 at Water Front, Port Kaituma, he had 304 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Marks’ attorney, Patrice Henry, told the court that his client’s luggage was searched at the Kingston Wharf before the boat had left for Pork Kaituma.
However, Police Prosecutor, Arwin Moore told the court that the suspected drug was found in a bucket the defendant was carrying when he was searched by the police at Port Kaituma.
Moore in his objection to the defendant being granted bail, cited the seriousness of the charge and also that when he was arrested he had confessed to the police that the drugs belonged to him.
The Chief Magistrate remanded Marks and transferred the matter to the Mathews Ridge Magistrate’s Court where it will be called again on November 8.
