M&CC intensifies inspection of food shops

THE Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown has intensified inspection of all eating houses, restaurants and provision shops that operate within the City.

According to a press statement on Friday, this is part of the Council’s statutory obligation under the Municipal and District Councils Act, Chapter 28:01.

“The Council has observed that there is an increasing number of eating houses and food establishments mushrooming, particularly in the central business district… it is not clear where consumptions are prepared and under what condition,” the statement said.

This has reportedly influenced the administration to take note and to intensify its operations to safeguard the health of citizens.

Early next week, the Council will be moving to raise awareness about the importance of meat and food hygiene with those food vendors who do business in different sections of the City.

Those who meet the requirements will be properly certified and their names will be published so that citizens will be guided when purchasing foods and beverages.

Those who fail to meet the standards will be encouraged to improve their arrangements so that they can be certified by the Council and assist in its effort to observe the integrity of the public health of Georgetown.
