Brathwaithe spurs Guyana to WIFBSC Short range title

….England win overall team shoot

DESPITE being beaten by both England and Ireland yesterday, Guyana still emerged victorious in the West Indies Fullbore Shooting Council’s short range championship.
Held at the Timheri Rifle Ranges, the locals were right up there with their European counterparts at the 300, 500 and 600 yard ranges.

With 1142 points and 85 V bulls, the Guyanese were spurred by Lennox Brathwaithe who had the highest individual score of the day.
His 148 and 19 V’s out of 150 points came from shooting a 49 and 5V’s at the 300 yards, followed by 49 and 7V’s at 500 yards and a possible 7V’s at 600 yards.
Sherwin Filicien was another main contributor, having marked a 144 and 10 V’s while National Captain Mahendra Persaud and Ransford Goodluck shot 143’s with 13 and 5 V’s respectively.

Other team members included Vice-Captain Dylan Fields who shot a 142 with 10 V’s, Peter Persaud and Leo Romalho who both shot 141 and 11 V’s each and newcomer, Roberto Tiwari with 140 and 6 V’s.
In the regional Championship, the 1069 points by Trinidad and Tobago meant that they finished second, while Barbados with 1066 points placed third and Antigua and Barbuda with 1057 placed fourth.

In the International Championship, England scored 1148 points for the win with their top scorer being Charlie Staples who marked 148 and 16 V’s.
Second placed Ireland was not far off with 1146 and 74 V’s with a pair of 147 and 9 V’s from David Calvert and Jack Alexander.
According to captain Persaud, the Guyanese unit managed to post competitive scores as against that of the competition and he was proud to have hosted the tournament.
The next instalment of the WIFBSC will take place in Barbados in May of 2018.
