ALLIANCE for Change (AFC) Executive, David Patterson, has accused Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo of telling “big fat lies” in a number of his recent public pronouncements.

On Thursday, the party said it is committed to ensuring transparency in public spending and will not be deterred by statements attributed to Jagdeo.

Speaking at a press briefing at the AFC headquarters in Kitty, Georgetown, the public infrastructure minister spoke extensively on the new Demerara Harbour Bridge project in a bid to counter statements made by the Opposition Leader.

Patterson said the original location of the bridge was supposed to have been “at a certain property owned by a certain best friend” of the former president.

“When you look at the map, it was landing there,” he said, and when it was changed, the Opposition Leader was peeved.

Party Chairman, Khemraj Ramjattan, also responded to claims made by Jagdeo that AFC officials are benefitting from contracts in the petroleum sector.

“I want to ask the question and not generally the way I do, who it is in the AFC that applied,” he asked before saying that he (Jagdeo) has “no credibility”.

“He walked around the ‘maro’ seven times and he didn’t marry the girl,” Ramjattan said, making reference to Jagdeo’s ‘marriage’ to Varshani Singh. The former President reportedly did not sign the marriage paper and separated from Singh a few years after with Singh claiming to be a victim of “high tech” violence.

He also said that Jagdeo had indicated in the past that he wanted to serve two terms as President and then become a farmer but after he served out his term, he got someone to challenge the law so that he can get a third term.

AFC Executive, Cathy Hughes, recalled that the PPP while in government had stated that the AFC was a “wishy washy” party that would not have lasted six months. However, she noted that the AFC since its formation a decade ago has won several seats in Parliament and is now part of the governing coalition.
