THE National Sports Commission (NSC) in collaboration with the sports department in Region 2 facilitated 16 sessions, teaching the foundation of table tennis to students of various primary schools.

Approximately 61 students between the ages of 6 to 11 participated in the exercise. On Monday and Tuesday last, the first segment of the four-day exercise was held at the Queenstown Community Centre ground while on Wednesday and Thursday, the programme was staged at the Hampton Court Primary School compound.

In an invited comment, Region 2 Sports Organiser, Ms. Debra Daniels explained that the exercise was to teach the foundation of table tennis in a fun way.
She further stated that the sessions were well attended and that the children were able to grasp the fundamentals very quickly. She also added that a number of teachers and parents also participated in the training which will further enhance the continuation of the programme in the Region.

The training was facilitated by National Table Tennis Coach, Linden Johnson. Daniels is hopeful that very shortly competitions involving the various schools within the region will be staged.

Recently, the Essequibo Table Tennis Association held a successful competition at the Anna Regina Secondary School’s auditorium where several promising players emerged. They have since been encouraged to further develop their skills through continued practice, dedication, and being involved in more competitive competitions.
