A 62-YEAR-OLD Peruvian national was on Thursday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan for overstaying.
Manuel Fernandez denied the charge which alleged that between June 4, 2017 and September 10, 2017 2017 at Georgetown, while being permitted to stay in Guyana from March 4, 2017 to June 3, 2017, he overstayed.
The unrepresented man with the aid of an interpreter told the court that he is a geologist and was living in Brazil. According to reports the accused came to Guyana via the Lethem trail and was granted three months stay by an immigration officer.
However, on September 10 he was nabbed at the Crabwood Creek stelling.
The Magistrate remanded the foreign national on the ground that he has no ties to Guyana and poses as a flight risk. The 62-year-old man was remanded to prison until September 15, where his matter will be called at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.
