Cannabis in shoes delivered to Camp Street prison

A 61-YEAR-OLD MAN was on Monday remanded to prison by City Magistrate Judy Lachman for drug trafficking.
Ishwar Persaud of Leopold Street, Georgetown denied that on August 31 at the Camp Street prison, he had 20 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
According to the unrepresented man, he didn’t know that ‘ganja’ was in the shoes given to him by a neighbour to take to a prisoner named, Ralph Franklin.
“I was not afraid because the man is my neighbour and I trust him,” Persaud told the court.
Police prosecutor, Richard Harris told the court that on the day in question Persaud was at the Camp Street prison to deliver food and clothing for an inmate. During a mandatory search of the care package, the drug was found inside the soles of the shoes that Persaud carried.
The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness of the charge and remanded the elderly man until September 18.
