Man almost faints –when hears bail set at $60,000

A 43-year-old man on Monday appeared before City Magistrate, Judy Latchman, charged with wounding his reputed wife with a knife.

Shawn Charles, denied that on August 18, at the East La Penitence Squatting Area, he unlawfully assaulted, Alexis Welcome, causing her actual bodily harm.
Charles, who was unrepresented by an attorney, told the court that the woman broke into his home and attacked him.
However, according to the facts read in court by Police Prosecutor, Adonis Innis, the accused and the woman are reputed husband and wife, and that on the day in question, they were involved in an argument when the incident occurred.
Innis said that during the argument, Charles reportedly took up a knife and “lashed” Welcome about the body, causing her to receive minor lacerations.
After hearing from the prosecutor, the magistrate announced that she was putting Charles on $60,000 bail, which caused him to almost faint and drop to his knees while in the docks.
But despite his pleas, the magistrate maintained her bail and adjourned the matter until August 23.
