-two children saved from falling building
Twenty –nine year old Marsha Jordan may have saved the lives of her two children after the house under which they sought shelter at Jawalla in the Upper Mazaruni collapsed on Friday afternoon.
The woman, who perished following the collapse of the house during a storm at the (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) village, had sought shelter along with her children under the building as the rains poured during the violent winds.
Reports are that Jordan was on her way home around 16:00hrs Friday when the storm was passing. The woman took her children under the building but as the winds grew stronger, the building started to fall.
Eyewitness accounts are that as the building started to collapse the woman pushed her two children from under the structure in a desperate attempt to save their lives. She was trapped and succumbed to her injuries which were said to be severe. The children escaped with minor injuries.
A medical official told the Guyana Chronicle from Jawalla on Saturday that a total of 12 buildings were damaged and the number includes the village office.
Regional authorities were dispatched to the village on Saturday morning to assess the damage where communication was cut-off as several radio antennas fell during the windy conditions.
