CRICKET West Indies (CWI) president Dave Cameron has congratulated the University of the West Indies’ initiative to include a Faculty of Sport.
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine Physician, Dr Akshai Mansingh has been appointed dean of the new faculty. His appointment comes into effect August 1.
The faculty, which becomes operational in the 2017-2018 academic year, will offer Certificate, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Sports Business, Sports Management, Sports Science, and the Art and Science of Coaching.
It is the first time in four decades that the UWI is adding a new faculty and the Cricket West Indies president believes it has come at an opportune time.
“The Faculty of Sport at the University of West Indies is a welcome addition to the academic inventory of the Caribbean at this time,” Cameron said in a statement.
“The University continues to be innovative and cutting-edge in its academic development and this suggests that the region is preparing the next generation of leaders, managers and workforce.”
Cameron said the value the faculty adds to the established sporting prowess of the region on the field, track, court and in the ring, shows the extent of what the university believes is an industry worthy of investment.
“We are pleased with the addition and wish the university the best in its efforts to support one of the fastest growing industries in the world,” he said, adding that the CWI stands ready to support the effort of the university.
