Jamaica held to 1-1 draw by El Salvador

JAMAICA drew 1-1 in a dour match against El Salvador in their final Group C match at the Alamodome on Sunday.

It was the fourth meeting between the two teams in the Gold Cup with Jamaica winning the previous three matches. However, it was El Salvador who took the early lead, in the 15th minute, when forward Nelson Bonilla got through on goal and slotted into the right hand corner past goalkeeper Andre Blake.
Both sides missed opportunities to score as the teams went to half-time with El Salvador leading 1-0.
Jamaica would get the chance to equalize in the 64rd minute after the Reggae Boyz were awarded a penalty when Narciso Orellana handled the ball inside the box.
Darren Mattocks booted home from the penalty spot and became Jamaica’s leading scorer in the Gold Cup competition. From there the game petered out to a tame draw which sent Jamaica on five points to the top of the group and into the quarter-final round.
Mexico (4 points) is to play Curacao with anything other than a loss seeing them topping the group and also go through to the next round.
El Salvador who also have four points are also likely to advance as one the of the two best third place teams.
