THE Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), in collaboration with the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) will host the annual 10K Team Run and Fun Walk-Jog-Run on Sunday, starting at 06:00hrs outside the YMCA on Thomas Lands.
Organisations and individual members of the public are all invited to participate. Prizes will be awarded for participants in the team event.
Teams must comprise four male and two female runners. The first four hundred persons to arrive on Sunday morning will receive an Olympic Day 2017 T-shirt.
Registration forms can be obtained at Olympic House on High Street, Kingston. However, persons can also register right at the event on Sunday, by simply turning up with their walking or running shoes, ready to participate.
Moving off from in front of the YMCA building, the route proceeds north on Camp Street to Carifesta Avenue, east on Carifesta Avenue and the Rupert Craig Highway to Liliendaal (where marshals will indicate the turning point). On the way back the procession turns off south into Vlissengen Road and then east into Thomas Lands and back to the YMCA.
The event is held in commemoration of the annual World Olympic Day, which is held every year on June 23 since 1948.
In 1978 the celebration of Olympic Day was included in the Olympic Charter – encouraging all National Olympic Committees (NOCs) to organise activities which promote the Olympic Movement. In 1987 forty-five NOCs participated in the first Olympic Day 10K runs.
