Islamic Solidarity Games – George into men’s 400m final

AFTER finishing in second place with a time of 46.15 seconds yesterday, Guyana’s Winston George will be in today’s men’s 400m final at the Islamic Solidarity Games ongoing in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The national record-holder finished behind Iran’s Ali Khadivar who clocked 45.85 seconds. The final is set for 19:10hrs today, with Baku being nine hours ahead. Prior to stepping out for the 400m, George will take on the men’s 200m, competing in heat 5 of 5, with an entry time of 20.40 seconds.

When he steps out on the track today George will be hoping to improve on the silver medal performances he recorded the last time he performed at the Games, five years ago in Indonesia. At that hosting George took silver in both the 400m and 200m.
Natrena Hooper was expected to have performed in the women’s triple jump yesterday. However, results were not available up to press time. She will return for the women’s 200m today, where she will compete along with Guyana’s Alita Moore.

Also performing today will be Guyana’s Emanuel Archibald in the men’s triple jump final.
In tomorrow’s schedule, Moore will be in the women’s 400m, Hooper in the women’s high jump and Archibald in the men’s long jump.
Results for other sports at the event are as follows:

SWIMMING
Guyana’s Andrew Fowler made it into the semi-finals of the men’s 50m freestyle on Monday. Clocking a time of 25.51 seconds, Fowler finished sixth in heat three of three, and advanced. In the semi-final he went on to clock 25.32 seconds.
Both Fowler and Guyanese Earlando McRae finished seventh in their respective heats of the men’s 100m freestyle yesterday. Swimming in heat one of three, McRae clocked 1:00.42s, while in heat two, Fowler finished his race in 57.54 seconds.

This was after McRae finished sixth with a time of 32.32 seconds in the men’s 50m backstroke heats. Prior to this, McRae finished seventh in his heats in the men’s 50m breaststroke with a time of 34.31 seconds.

BOXING
Guyana’s Joel Williamson and Desmond Amsterdam lost in the round of 16 in their respective categories. Fighting in the Men’s Light (60kg), Williamson went under against Turkey’s Hakan Dogan on points; Amsterdam lost to Azerbaijan’s Kamran Shakhsuvarly in the men’s middle (75kg) category

JUDO
Guyana’s Joshua Buchanan lost to Saudi Arabia’s Abdullah Hammad in the round of 32 in the Men’s 73kg category. Erskine Trotman was defeated by Jordan’s Ibrahim Khalaf in the round of 16 of the men’s 90kg category.
