… Remembered as hardworking and dedicated
THE Guyana Karate College is mourning the loss of one of its founding members and instructors, Sensei Lavern Jones.
Jones, who passed away on May 12 was one of the founding members of the GKC and Board of Trustee member since its inception in 2005.
She was also an instructor at GKC and specialised in teaching the children’s class.
According to Senior Instructor Sensei Jeffrey Wong, Jones’ passing will surely have an effect on the college as her guidance to the youngsters was essential to their success in both regional and international tournaments.
“We will greatly miss her when it comes to training and even in everyday life. She was a wonderful person and a great influence on the youths of the GKC and I know her passing will be taken hard by those with whom she shared a special bond,” said Sensei Wong.
Meanwhile head of the GKC and International Karate Diagaku (IKD) Sensei Frank Woon-A-Tai, in a statement said, “She suffered a stroke when I was in Guyana last February. I visited her in hospital and she was later discharged.”
“She was a dedicated karate instructor and began her training in the early 1970s under Shihan Keith DaCosta, 7th Dan. Sensei Lavern was one of my most loyal and trusted students and I will miss her terribly.”
“(My wife) Maureen and I, as well as IKD, send her daughter and loved ones our most sincere condolences. She is now at peace with the Lord.”
