THE curtains came down on the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) second junior tournament for 2017, the Woodpecker Products Ltd Junior National Squash Championships, which were held at the Georgetown Club Inc courts.
Ten champions were crowned, with Shomari Wiltshire and Taylor Fernandes being the top players on show.
Shomari Wiltshire defeated Daniel Islam in three tough games to win both the Under- 17 and Under- 19 titles: 11/6, 11/8, 11/7, while Taylor Fernandes outplayed Rebecca Low in the final Under-19 match, winning comfortably in straight games: 11/4, 11/5, 11/6.
Other winners in the tournament included: Beau Fernandes who took the Girls Under-11 title ahead of Christiana Fernandes and Isabella Ramjohn, while on the male end of things, Mohyryan Baksh beat Louis Da Silva, Nathan Rahaman and Shiloh Asregado in that order.
At the Girls Under-13 level, Kirsten Gomes triumphed over Paige Fernandes and Haley Carpenter, while Michael Alphonso was victorious over Demetrius De Abreu and Ethan Jonas respectively, in the Boys’ division.
Makeda Harding was able to overcome the challenges of Abosaide Cadogan and Kirsten Gomes respectivel, to take the Girl’s Under-15 title, while Shomari Wiltshire held off the challenges of Samuel Ince – Carvalhal and Gianni Carpenter in the Boys’ division.
Harding also picked up the Girls Under-17 title ahead of Cadogan and Gomes, while in the men’s division, Wiltshire showed his class to outwit Daniel Islam and Alex Cheeks.
The Girls Under-19 class belonged to Taylor Fernandes who got the better of Makeda Harding and Rebecca Low.
Additionally, Kirsten Gomes took the most improved girl’s trophy, while her male counterpart was Michael Alphonso.
Harding and Wiltshire took the female and male awards respectively for the most outstanding players of their genders.
Prizes were presented to all winners by Robert Fernandes who represented the sponsors.
