Paying attention to autism

The Sorsha Williams Foundation in collaboration with the Sonia Noel Foundation for Creative Arts yesterday held a Fashion Show and Tea Party on the lawns of the Promenade Gardens, in observance of Autism Awareness Month. Autism Awareness month is observed around the world in April.

The programme was chock full of activities and was well attended by enthusiastic persons who braved the inclement weather to pay tribute and lend support to the persons — especially children — who are affected by Autism in Guyana.
Items on the four-hour programme included an Opening Prayer by Gwendolyn Tross; Welcome Remarks by Mrs. Karen Williams, Founder and President of Sorsha Williams Foundation and mother of the child, Sorsha, in whose honour the foundation was launched. Sorsha also recited a poem “I am.”

There were also fashion displays by Sonia Noel and others, and the presentation of gifts and certificates.
Additionally, the programme was spiced by dance sequences, including: Interpretive Dance Displays; Salsa and Ball Room Dance; African Dance by Kijana Lewis; Hip Hop Dance Performance; by Euphoria Dance Group comprising Seon Douglas, Carlos Persaud and Jamal Ellise.

Meanwhile, other scheduled attractions included: ‘Steel Pan Presentation by Ras Camo Williams; Face Painting; Bouncy Castle and Trampoline for the delight of the children present.
Autism is a life-long developmental condition that affects the way a person communicates, interacts and processes information. (Scottish Autism)
The autism spectrum refers to the range of ways the condition can present in the individual which can vary greatly from person to person and throughout their life.
