OLD Fort Shooting Stars pulled off their first win of the Woodpecker Products Women’s First Division Hockey League with a 2-1 victory over newcomers, the GCC Spartans.
While the match seemed fairly even in the opening minutes, a hard hit into the Spartans defensive area met the stick of Sulika Treurniet and deflected to find goalkeeper Jessica Mittleholtzer going the wrong way.
Both Mittleholtzer for Spartans and Sarafina Phillips for Old Fort were solid in goal for their respective teams throughout the match.
In her quest to equalise, the Spartans midfielder Princessa Wilkie, who had pushed higher into attack, bullied her way into the Old Fort circle and sent her shot past Phillips into the goal on the right post.
Wilkie’s goal with ten minutes remaining breathed new life into the match,as both teams pressed forward with relentlessly for the winning goal. Old Fort would receive a penalty corner just as time expired, leaving the Spartans to make one more defensive play.
Minsodia Culpepper’s hard push, however, was too much for the Spartans and gave jubilant Old Fort the 2-1 victory with no time remaining on the clock.
In the second Woodpecker First Division match of the week, sisters Sonia Jardine and Kerensa Fernandes put all doubts to rest as to which was the top side in the competition.
Coming off a 10-0 thrashing of Old Fort and a 7-0 win over the Spartans, the Pizza Hut GCC ladies inflicted a 6-0 beating on the Woodpecker Hikers with all goals being scored by the sisters.
After a scoreless ten minutes of play, Jardine decided she had enough and sent a powerful blast into the Hikers goal after receiving a pass from Fernandes on the right.
Less than one minute later,Jardine scored her second goal high into the net when she pounced on a Hikers defensive fumble, eliminated the sweeper and unleashed her shot.
Jardine would score once more before the half and remained the only goal scorer of the match in the 36th minute when she scored her fourth goal and the first of the second half.
Sister Kerensa Fernandes would choose this point to get in the act as she received a cross from Gabriella Xavier on the left wing to slam in her first goal and her team’s 5th in the 37th minute. Fernandes would blast home the final goal of the match less than one minute later to leave the score at 6-0 in favour of the Pizza Hut ladies.
