Sophia teen remanded for Stabroek murder

A TEENAGER of Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was on Tuesday remanded to the Sophia Juvenile Detention Centre for the murder of Haymant Persaud, who is the brother of Police Commissioner, Seelall Persaud.
It is alleged that the teen stabbed to death Persaud of Affiance, Essequibo Coast, on February 19, 2017, in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market Area.

The Commissioner had positively identified the body of his younger brother at the Georgetown Public Hospital mortuary after the police had issued a notice a few days before, seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the body.
This newspaper understands that the 15-year-old was positively identified by a witness during an identification parade last Friday. The police however are still on the hunt for two other suspects, who are also fingered in the murder. It is believed that a woman is the ‘mastermind’ behind the man’s death.

Reports indicate that Persaud was on a ‘drinking spree’ in the vicinity of Stabroek Market when he was joined by the female after which he was reportedly lured to a washroom in the area.
The 51-year-old was reportedly attacked by two men and stabbed with a knife by one of the perpetrators. The robbers relieved him of his money and other valuables before escaping. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The matter was adjourned until March 21.
