A HASHTAG social media competition, tech day camps and public relations campaigns are among a series of activities planned by the National Frequency Management Unit (NMFU), in observance of Guyana Girls in ICT 2017.The occasion will be observed on April 27, under the theme “Expanding horizons, changing minds”, National Frequency Management Unit (NMFU) Chief Executive Officer, Valmikki Singh told reporters on Wednesday.
“We are looking to have features on radio, TV and the print media and hoping to have an e-magazine to feature events and role models,” he said, pointing out that on April 27, International Girls in ICT Day, a symposium and several tech day camps will be held.
At these camps, female technicians will interact with school children on opportunities in the Information and Communication Technology sector and to encourage them to consider careers in this field.
He pointed out that booths will also be set up to create awareness on computer repairs, coding, computer graphics and cyber security.
‘Girls in ICT’ is a global initiative spearheaded by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to raise awareness of the need for more women to become involved in the ICT sector worldwide.
It provides an opportunity to inspire girls and young women to get involved in the sector by listening to women role models.
The NFMU Facebook page “Guyana Girls in ICT” aims to improve digital literacy and promote the sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics and ICT careers as tools for development and empowerment of women and girls in Guyana.
The NMFU has met with representatives of Digicel Guyana, UG Computer Science Department, the E-Government Unit, Ministry of Public Telecommunications, and the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority to discuss upcoming activities in celebration of Guyana Girls in ICT 2017.
