–as IAC commemorates Lusignan Massacre victims
SOCIAL Cohesion Minister, Dr George Norton, has offered words of encouragement to the community of Lusignan, particularly the families of the Lusignan Massacre at the Indian Action Committee (IAC) Ninth Annual Memorial Service. The well attended event was billed an “Evening of Remembrance.”
Former Prime Minister, Sam Hinds and former junior Finance Minister, Bishop Juan Edghill, also attended the ceremony, which took place at Track “A”, Lusignan, the street where the incident occurred.
The inter-faith event was chaired by Neaz Subhan.
Dr Norton reminded the gathering that the horrific incident which occurred on January 26, 2008, and saw the brutal murder of 11 persons, including five children, rocked not only the families and the community of Lusignan, but the entire country.
“Five families may have been directly affected, but the Lusignan Massacre affected the entire community of Lusignan and by extension, all of Guyana. These children were not allowed the opportunity to have their own families and contribute to the development of their country, Guyana,” Dr Norton said.
Speaking to the families and surviving victims, Dr Norton said the Government is still committed to providing whatever support it can, as the families and community continue to heal.
The memorial is an annual event organised by the IAC in memory of the victims.
Over the years, the IAC has worked with the relatives, residents of Lusignan and the religious community in commemorating this event in an effort to ensure that the memories of those whose lives were snuffed out would not fade into oblivion.
