A THREE-YEAR prison sentence was on Friday handed down by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to a 58-year-old man, who was arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for causing the death of a motorist in March, last year.At the conclusion of the trial Magistrate McLennan commended the prosecution, which was spearheaded by Inspector Neville Jeffers, noting that she was satisfied with the strong case it presented.
Andrew Alder of West Ruimveldt, a former driver attached to the Guyana Oil Company (GuyOil) was found guilty of driving motorcar PMM 3981 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Denesh Bissoon on March 6, 2016 at Houston Access Road.
Magistrate McLennan recapped the prosecution’s facts, as well as Alder’s testimony, which she deemed as ‘not logical’. She highlighted that Bisson died from the injuries sustained due to the accident which caused his death.
During her address, she stated that the court was satisfied that he had caused the death of the man. “The court is sure that you failed to exercise care, caution, common sense, courtesy and consideration on that day. You fell below the care and caution necessary for competent driving. The court hereby finds you guilty as charged,” the Chief Magistrate said.
Alder’s lawyer, Patrice Henry, attempted to plea during mitigation. He asked the Magistrate to consider granting his clients non-custodial sentence considering Alder’s age. However Magistrate sentenced Alder to three years imprisonment.
