LOUIS Byas, 41, was sentenced to three years jail and fined $157,000 on Tuesday by City Magistrate Leron Daly after he was found guilty of having 105 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

Byas has been on the remand for the past two months and his trial commended Tuesday after which he was found guilty by the Magistrate. He was caught with the illegal substance on November 26, 2016 at his South Ruimveldt, Georgetown home.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Bharat Mangru called a total of three witnesses to testify; he also tendered as evidence a pair of scissors, two scales and a quantity of zip-loc bags.

The court heard that on the day in question, officers busted Byas while he was in his lower flat cutting up plastic to make into Ziploc bags. The cannabis was found in a plate on a table next to the defendant. The man reportedly told the cops, “Officers I does smoke weed that is meh hobby… I ain’t getting no job so I buy the weed to sell.”

However, when Byas was called to lead his defense, he denied being at home when the narcotics was found. He told the court that he was on the road “smoking a joint.”
