THREE miners were on Friday charged with simple larceny after allegedly stealing raw gold from their employer at Aorangi Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven(Cuyuni-Mazaruni).The men, Steve James, 25, of Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara; Shemmy Bernad,19 and Prince Bascom 23 both of St Cuthbert’s Mission, pleaded not guilty to the charge which was read by Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan.
It is alleged that on January 11 at Aorangi Backdam, Cuyuni River, the men stole four and a half penny weights of raw gold from Prince Bowman, their employer. The trio was granted $50,000 bail each by the chief magistrate.
Police prosecutor, Deniro Jones, did not object to the granting of bail by the chief magistrate, but requested that bail be set at a substantial amount, since the gold was not recovered.
The matter was transferred to the Bartica Magistrates Court for February 3.
