FOR the first time in its three-year history, female teams will be competing in the Third

Edition of the Wakapoa Premier League, a football tournament which has provided much entertainment and excitement for the Pomeroon River community.
The tournament, which boasts four male teams competing for the coveted crown of football champions in the Region Two area, commenced over the past weekend. Three female teams will also challenge one another and the top units in both the male and female categories will walk away with bragging rights as well as the cash prize of $200 000.

The tournament, which commenced in 2013, is sponsored by the Wakapoa United Football Club. “This year we will be hosting our 3rd Annual Premier League,” chairman of the club, Djeon Cornelius told Chronicle Sport recently. This year’s tournament commenced on Christmas Eve Day and continued on Christmas Day. The finals will be played on January 7.”
Several teams from outside the community, including squads from Moruca were expected to

feature in the tournament. The male teams this year are Yarashirima Pride, Myrie Blazers, Massarie Rangers and Curemeru Jaguars while the female players will compete against villages within the area. The women are expected to play their matches on January 6.
Over the two days of action, the Curemeru Jaguars registered wins and have proved to be the top team in the competition.

“Participation by our female players is just one of many accomplishments that our club is extremely proud of. Beyond soccer leagues, the club also sponsors soccer camps to improve the skills of our players. We also are in the process of developing an aggressive children’s programme,” the overseas-based Cornelius said.
He stated that in addition to the cash prizes, other prizes will be up for grabs by the teams competing in this year’s format.
