Electricity should be back to normal by weekend
GENERAL Manager of the Linden Electricity Company Incorporated (LECI), Patrick Dublin said Tuesday that the company is working feverishly at stabilising the generation of of electricity in the township, and that things should return to normal soon.
He gave as the reason for the spate of blackouts the township is currently experiencing the sudden breakdown of one of the company’s Caterpillar generators.
“They are servicing one of the small CAT sets, and that should bring some relief by midday today,” Dublin said, adding:
“They have leased one because one got damaged; it caught a fire two nights ago, so that caused the problem.”
He said that Company’s technicians are also working on rapairing a three-megawatt Wartsila set, and that as soon as that job is completed, things will return to normal.
He gave the Guyana Chronicle every assurance that the servicemen are working round-the-clock to have stable electricity by this weekend.
For several days, Linden has been experiencing steady blackouts, with increasing regularity over the last two days.
Since Monday electricity has been alternating between Mackenzie and across the river at Wismar, causing blackouts in those communities for several hours, in some cases all day or all night.
This situation has raised concerns for many residents, given that the Christmas weekend is fast approaching.
“Like we gon get a black Christmas,” one resident said as she expressed frustration over the regular power outage.
“These people will spoil people Christmas meat and appliance man,” another blurted out.
It’s an inconvenience which, though necessary, Mr Dublin would like to apologise for. As he hastened to explain, rotating the electricity is the only option, as the technicians do not want to put undue pressure on the generators.
“Due to the same pressure caused one to burn, so they down one of the sets for maintenance and servicing,” he said.
If this is not done, he said, then the long-term benefit of stable electricity may not be guaranteed.
