THE Special Olympics Guyana 5K run-walk-wheel marathon was held on Sunday at the National Park. The event saw a total of 30 differently-abled athletes compete in five categories. In the ‘Persons with Intellectual Disabilities’ category, nine athletes competed and finishing in the top three were Niomi Hicks, Ruth-Ann Collins and Carolyn Matthews who came first, second and third respectively.
In the male ‘Persons with Intellectual Disability’ category, 16 athletes competed with one athlete being disqualified, Calvin Thomas finished first, Ravindra Latchman placed second and Brandon Perreira was third.
The ‘Wheelchair Users’ category had two participants. Vlyssess Edwards placed first and Utpamkumar Isurdeen took second spot.
Five athletes competed in the ‘Amputees’ category. However, only four athletes were able to complete the race. In first, second and third positions were Dennis Berne, Looklught Perreira and Gavin Jeffers.
In the visually-impaired category, Paul Cotton and Silas Rogers finished first and second for males, with Mekyla Belgrave taking first spot for females.
